An old folk song with some stuff vaguely to do with the Nativity grafted on, in the same that Christmas uses the symbolism of Solstice to make a point about the "dawning of a New Light in the midst of darkness". It seems symbolic of how Christianity made use of local traditions, including pagan ones like those involving holly, mistletoe, and trees.
